Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to clarify the factors influencing the journal selection of researchers for paper publication, which is expected to serve as a reference for academic journals to improve service ability and brand influence. [Methods] Based on previous research and data on author interview, a questionnaire was designed, involving 33 factors (external factors, subjective factors, and journal factors). A total of 467 valid questionnaires were recovered and statistically analyzed. [Findings] The requirements of graduation or assessment and professional title evaluation are the major external factors. The main rational subjective factors are judgment of their own article quality and the preference of specific journals. The main emotional subjective factor is the experience. The level, reputation, and article-processing time of journals also affect the journal selection. Natural science researchers generally emphasize the impact factor and they also seek suggestions from teachers and friends. Researchers in humanities and social sciences pay more attention to journal activities and emphasize whether their articles can be reviewed fairly. Researchers with senior titles do not worry about the publication, and they care more about the convenience of the submission system and the attitude of editors as compared with researchers with intermediate tiles, primary titles, or no title. [Conclusions] It is suggested that academic journals should improve academic quality and time of article processing and highlight the specific characteristics to strengthen authors' recognition, enhance fairness, and raise service quality, thereby attracting high-quality papers.
