Abstract:

[Purposes] Based on the subject classification of SSCI journals, the differences between Article and Review references in different subjects are analyzed to facilitate the relevant personnel to understand and draw lessons from them. It also provides data support for further understanding the advantages and disadvantages of current journal bibliometric indicators. [Methods] We downloaded the main bibliometric indicators of each journal in the 2015 SSCI by subject, and recorded the quartile in each subject and the average number of references in Article and Review. Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the reference quantity of Article and Review in each subject and the bibliometric indicators of the discipline. [Finding] In 2015, SSCI indexed 4468 journals in 57 subjects. The amount of Article and Review references is not related to subject size (both P>0.05). The number of references of Article and Review in the subject is in the same sequence: Q1 quartile (60.27, 86.85)>Q2 quartile (52.21, 83.80)>Q3 quartile (48.16, 74.61)>Q4 quartile (45.70, 62.90), and the differences are statistically significant (all P<0.05). Correlations analysis results show that the Article reference quantity is only related to the median cited half-life and the median citation half-life of the subject; the Review reference quantity is related to other major bibliometric indicators except the median cited half-life(all P<0.05). [Conclusions] According to the SSCI subject group, the relationship between Article and Review reference quantity and subject influence is not consistent, and the two are not related to the scale of the subject; the journals with higher academic influence in the same subject have relatively more references of Article and Review.
