Abstract:

Purposes To probe into the dynamic changes in the outflow of Chinese social science papers between 2015 and 2024 and to provide an international comparison, with the aim of offering empirical evidence to help reduce the outflow of such papers and formulate strategies for improvement. Methods Using the InCites database, the outflow rates of social science papers from different countries and regions were collected and calculated. The distribution of outflow destinations for Chinese social science papers, along with the volume and outflow rates from the 31 provincial-level administrative regions in China(not induding Hong Kong,Taiwan and Macao), were statistically analysed. Findings Between 2015 and 2024, China’s outflow of social science papers has shown a persistent upward trend. While not the highest in absolute volume compared to other nations, China ranks first in outflow rate. The destinations for China’s social science papers are relatively concentrated, primarily in England, the United States, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Domestically, Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong lead in distribution, followed closely by Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Sichuan, and Shandong in terms of comprehensive social science paper output. Conclusions Compared with other countries and regions worldwide, China’s rate of outflow of social science papers was relatively high between 2015 and 2024. Going forward, the state should actively establish a system of social science journals with international influence, encourage social science scholars to publish their academic work in domestic social science journals, and further enhance China’s academic influence and international voice in the social sciences.
