Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to investigate the application of reference managing software in journal articles and analyze the output results. [Methods] Articles from English journal Chinese Journal of Cancer as well as Chinese journals Journal of Sun Yat-sen University (Medical Sciences) and The Journal of Practical Medicine were selected to figure out if the reference managing software was used and if yes, which type of software was used. According to the reference style of the Journal of Sun Yat-sen University (Medical Sciences), articles which were managed by the EndNote or NoteExpress were checked. The output results were checked manually, and the notice to reference managing software was abstracted. [Findings] A total of 244 published articles on which the reference was attached were selected from these journals. The results show that the application rate is 50%, 35.4% and 14.7% respectively. Among all selected articles, 74 articles are managed by softwares, taking up 30.3%, including 43 managed by EndNote and 25 by NoteExpress, taking up 58.1% and 33.8% respectively. In the 68 articles which were managed by the EndNote or NoteExpress , the English references are more than Chinese references, with the ratio of approximately 10…1 in respect of EndNote and 5…1 of NoteExpress. There is no significant difference in software application rate between English and Chinese authors. The output results are satisfied, especially English references managed by EndNote. However, some style and content errors rise out in both English and Chinese references managed by reference managing software. [Conclusions] The application rate of reference managing software is relatively low in articles of domestic medical journals. English references are more than Chinese ones in the articles which were managed by the software. The suggestion of applicating reference managing software proposed on the submission guideline or the journal website is recommended. Even though the software generates satisfied results, the style of references still need to be carefully checked by editors for confirmation.
