Relationship among first author and co-author productivity, influence, and cited frequency of papers

Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to compare correlation differences between the productivity and influence of the first author and co-author of academic papers with the cited frequency of papers after publication, providing a certain reference for journal editors to screen highly cited papers in the preliminary review. [Methods] In this study, 484 papers published in 2017 in the Acta Editologica and Chinese Journal of Scientific and Technical Periodicals were selected. Among them, 142 papers had only one author, and 342 papers had two or more authors. The cited frequency of all papers was collected from CNKI, and the productivity of the authors was measured by the number of papers published from 2014 to 2020. The influence of the authors was characterized by the h index of the authors in the same period. The correlation among the author productivity, influence, and cited frequency of 484 papers was statistically analyzed. [Findings] The cited frequency of papers with only one author is not related to author productivity (r=0.163, P=0.053) but positively correlated with author influence (r=0.287, P<0.001). In papers with two or more authors, the cited frequency of papers is positively correlated with the productivity and influence of the first author (r=0.195, P<0.001; r=0.320, P<0.001), as well as the productivity and influence of co-authors (r=0.115, P<0.001; r=0.134, P<0.001). [Conclusions] DFor papers with only one author or with two or more authors, papers with a high h index for the first author and co-authors are highly cited after publication, and papers from co-authors with higher productivity are highly cited after publication. The results suggest that journal editors may screen out highly cited papers by referring to the author's h index and co-author productivity during the preliminary review of manuscripts.

【目的】 比较学术论文的第一作者和合著者的生产力、影响力与论文发表后被引频次的相关性差异,为期刊编辑初审筛选高被引论文提供一定的参考。【方法】 以《编辑学报》和《中国科技期刊研究》2017年发表的484篇论文为研究对象,其中独著论文142篇,合著论文342篇。利用中国知网分别收集所有论文的被引频次,并以论文所有作者2014―2020年的发文量表征作者生产力,以论文作者该时段的h指数表征作者影响力,对484篇论文的第一作者和合著者的生产力、影响力与论文的被引频次的相关性进行统计分析。【结果】 独著论文的被引频次与作者生产力无关(r=0.163,P=0.053),与作者影响力呈正相关(r=0.287,P<0.001)。在合著论文中,论文的被引频次与第一作者生产力、影响力均呈正相关(r=0.195,P<0.001;r=0.320,P<0.001),与合著者的生产力、影响力也均呈正相关关系(r=0.115,P<0.001;r=0.134,P<0.001)。【结论】 无论是独著论文还是合著论文,第一作者和合著者h指数高的论文发表后被引频次高。若合著者发文量较高,论文发表后被引频次也较高。结果提示,期刊编辑初审稿件时参考作者h指数和合著者发文量,可能筛选出高被引论文。
