[Purposes] Based on the comparison of structure and layout between SSCI and CSSCI journals in the area of education, this study aims to provide suggestions for improving the top-level design of journal structure and promoting the internationalized construction of Chinese educational journals. [Methods] We selected 278 SSCI educational journals and 54 CSSCI educational journals to research the disciplinary layout and geographic layout. [Finding] SSCI and CSSCI educational journals cover 18 and 12 subject areas, respectively. SSCI and CSSCI have obvious differences in the fields of general education, special education, educational sociology, education, higher education, and adult education. The research gaps exist on the CSSCI journals in the six subject fields of education history, teaching theory, moral education principles, educational psychology, educational statistics, and educational sociology. The distributions of CSSCI and SSCI show moderate correlation. The geographical distributions of SSCI and CSSCI are not balanced. [Conclusions] The coverage of CSSCI disciplines in China needs to be further improved. The index of education journals has weak subject areas, which needs to strengthen the construction of journals in crossing discipline and emerging discipline. There are many comprehensive education journals indexed by CSSCI, and the construction of professional education journals needs to be accelerated. The consistency of the layout of CSSCI and SSCI education journals needs to be improved, and the international development trend needs to be closely followed. The regional balanced development of education journals needs to be improved.
