Abstract:

[Purposes] The application scenario of blockchain technology in the whole scientific research lifecycle is studied, and how to solve the difficult problems faced by scholarly communication and how to support the development of the academic publishing are discussed. [Methods] Starting from the problems which were difficult to solve in scholarly communication, we summarized the advantages and characteristics of blockchain technology. The application scenarios of blockchain technology in the whole scientific research lifecycle were emphatically analyzed through case studies. We tried to explore how the blockchain can help scholarly communication and academic publishing serve the whole scientific research lifecycle. [Finding] Blockchain technology can be applied to all stages of the scientific research lifecycle and record the scientific research process on the premise of ensuring data security, integrity and intellectual property rights, while opening up and recognizing various types of scientific research outputs. [Conclusions] Blockchain technology can solve the problems of reproducibility crisis and lack of open research data in scholarly communication, and become a new driving force of open science.
