Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to analyze change laws of self-citation and corresponding reasons for Journal of Lake Sciences published in recent 10 years and explore abnormal phenomenon of journal self-citation to guide people to objectively understand the self-citation of academic journal and lay a solid foundation for the journal developments in further steps. [Methods] Based on the data from Science and Technology Journal Citation Report and statistical results from references of Journal of Lake Sciences published from 2006 to 2015, the variation of the journal evaluation indexes, such as self-cited rate (RSC), total cited frequency(FTC), total self-cited frequency (FSC), self-cited frequency (FSCIF), total cited frequency (FTCIF), and total self-cited rate (RSCIF) which are related to impact factor (IF), paper quantity, and average citation quantity, and their correlation, were analyzed. [Findings] Under the natural condition, the RSC of Journal of Lake Sciences in recent 10 years does not change so much. The FTC, FSC, FSCIF and paper quantity increase. The RSCIF is slightly higher than RSC, but it has no significant impact on IF. [Conclusions] The RSC is related to the subject scope. The increasement of research and development investment for scientific research, improvement of journal article quality, application of digital tools, and enhancement of journal visibility lead to the increasement of FTC, FSC and FSCIF. Possible indications show that the journal may be artificially manipulated, especially by journal editors when the RSC is too high or increases drastically, FSCIF is closely correlated with IF, and RSCIF is much higher than RSC. Chinese editors of academic journals should pay more attention on content quality instead of evaluation indexes in order to obtain domestic recognition from scientists and international visibility for their journals in the world.
