Abstract:

[Purposes] The proportional change of basic research in international medical journals from multiple categories and with different influence is analyzed, so as to provide reference for the development of Chinese medical journals in the era of precision medicine. [Methods] Sixty-eight medical journals from seventeen categories were selected based on the Web of Science categories and journal quartile rankings in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). All publications from 1987 to 2016 of these journals were searched on PubMed. Then the fold change method was used to find the proportional change trends of basic science publications, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine the statistical significance. [Findings] The decline of basic science publications is confirmed, but it is only common in high impact journals from JCR Q1. [Conclusions] The medical journals should adapt to the development requirements of the era of precision medicine to improve the communication between basic research and clinical practice.
