Abstract:

[Purposes] We summarize the working mode for organizing special topics and special issues (collectively called "key issues") in the Journal of Shandong University (Health Sciences), in order to provide references for medical journals of universities to solicit contribution on relatively large-scale. [Methods] A comparison was conducted on the download and citation frequencies between the soliciting and free contributions from 7 key issues, which were published in the Journal of Shandong University (Health Sciences) from 2016 to 2017. The publication effect of the key issues was analyzed. After the whole process of organizing key issues was reviewed, the working mode and key points for soliciting contributions were refined. A profound thinking on the deficiencies of the mode was also made. [Findings] The download and citation frequencies of the soliciting contributions are 2.74 times and 6.00 times higher than those of the free contributions in the same issue. By more than 2 years' practice, we set up a working mode for soliciting contributions on a larger scale, by which the enthusiasm of editorial board members is effectively inspired, and thus the development of the journal entered into a virtuous cycle. [Conclusions] The academic influence of the journal is improved by the published key issues, and the established contribution-soliciting mode is maneuverable and replicable. It is feasible for the medical journals of universities to set up an individualized working mode on soliciting contributions, by which the dilemma of running a journal can be broken.
