Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to analyze the main characteristics of world-class scientific journals and design an evaluation system for them, which is expected to serve as a reference for building world-class scientific journals. [Methods] Based on profiles and basic characteristics of world-class scientific journals, an index system for the screening and evaluating world-class scientific journals was designed. Then the leading journals in Excellence Action Plan for China STM Journals (hereinafter referred to as the Excellence Action Plan) were compared with the screened world-class journals, in an effort to elucidate the gap with the latter. [Findings] A total of 268 world-class journals were yielded, taking up 2.9% of the SCI-indexed journals. They are from 8 developed countries and none of them is from China. Clinical medicine tops the world-class scientific journal table and coming in the second is engineering. Disciplines with no world-class journal amount to 51. Although the category normalized citation impact of leading journals in Excellence Action Plan is close to that of world-class scientific journals, the number of papers, cited frequency, and cited half-life need to be further improved. On the whole, for the leading journals in Excellence Action Plan, 5 of the 10 indicators have achieved world-class levels. [Conclusions] Screening and evaluating world-class scientific journals based on profiles is helpful for the building of world-class scientific journals in China.
