Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper explores the motivational drivers of scientific researchers to select specific journals for publication and puts forward suggestions for developing proper motivation in them. [Methods] Through Grounded Theory's three-stage coding of 19 researchers' interviews and network data, an explanatory model for researchers' motivation to select journals was established. [Findings] Authors' motivation is generally affected by a combination of multiple factors which are deconstructed into six main categories: academic pressure reducing, academic ideals, self-expectations, environmental incentives, journal management, and author perception. Among them, academic pressure, academic ideals, and self-expectations are the internal drivers for researchers to publish papers, shaping passive, positive, and moderate motives of journal selection, respectively. At the same time, environmental incentives, journal management, and author perception are determinants of journal selection. [Conclusions] In the future, efforts should be made to regulate researchers, journals, and evaluation systems in an attempt to develop proper motivation in researchers for journal publication and create correctitude academic atmosphere.
