Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper probes into the method of establishing journal indicator of percentage rank (JIPR) based on the percentile in subject area (PSA) of papers in InCites database and compares the journal evaluation results of different JIPRs. [Methods] JIPRs of papers published in 2017-2018 on journals of multidisciplinary science in 2018 JCR were established based on their PSAs in InCites database, including JIPR4, JIPR6, JIPR8, JIPR10, JIPR100, and average percentile in subject area (aPSA). The evaluation results of these journals based on different JIPRs were compared. [Findings] JIPR4s of the 68 journals show skewed distribution and other JIPRs show normal distribution. Most indicators are highly correlated, particularly the JIPRs. Journals with great variation in impact factor and aPSA rank are those with more review articles and great contribution of a single highly-cited paper to the impact factor. [Conclusions] Most JIPR indicators are superior to impact factor in journal evaluation, especially aPSA.
