Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to investigate the degree of journal self-citation (JSC) and its influence on impact factor (IF), so as to track their dynamic changes. [Methods] Taking the journals in the category of management indexed by JCR as samples, this study investigated the annual values of four indicators, including self-citing rate (SRR), self-cited rate (SCR), IF (with JSCs), and IF0 (without JSCs), and detected their relationships by quartile ranking comparison and diachronic analysis. [Findings] Across the last decade, SRR remained stable, while SCR showed an upward trend before 2012 but a downward trend after 2012. JSCs do have an influence on IF, but to a limited extent. There is no universal correlation between JSC rate and IF in every quartile. Moreover, the distribution and change rules of the above indicators are significantly different in different quartiles. [Conclusions] It reveals a favorable publishing environment in management journals. Both the degree of JSC and its influence on IF have not intensified. We should treat JSC optimistically and cautiously.
