Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to compare the quotation accuracy and inappropriate quotation of the references of articles published in 10 Chinese series and medical academic journals with high impact factors, analyze the differences, and then explore the ways to improve the accuracy of reference citation. [Methods] We obtained the full-text copies of all original references in the 96 articles published in these journals, referred to the full text of the literature to check the situation of quotation accuracy and inappropriate quotation (unrelated quotation, related multi-quotation, missing quotation, and misquotation), and analyzed the difference of the quotation accuracy rate and inappropriate quotation rate between Chinese series and medical academic journals. [Finding] The two series of journals have examined a total of 1502 full-text articles, and the total inappropriate quotation rate is 14.58% (219 of 1502 references); the unreasonable quotation rates of Chinese series and medical academic journals are 15.13% and 14.09%, respectively. There are 1821 reference citations with the total inappropriate quotation rate of 12.74%, the unreasonable citation rates of Chinese series and medical academic journals are 13.28% and 12.23%, respectively. The quotation accuracy rate of Chinese references is higher than that of English references in Chinese series(reference: 93.20% vs 82.72%, P<0.005; quotation: 94.51% vs 84.69%, P<0.005). Among the inappropriate quotations, multi-quotation and misquotation are the most common errors, and number errors are the most common in the misquotation. The accuracy of the uniquotation of the English journal articles of the two series of journals is higher than the accuracy of multiple quotations.[Conclusions] Although the quotation accuracy is relatively high, some authors do not give enough attention to the accurate reference citation of Chinese literature, and the literature cites at different locations will increase the inappropriate quotation rate.
