Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to improve the defects of percentile indicators in revealing the characteristic of number of published papers, and introduce a new indicator, Percentile Rank C (PRC), which is based on double-distributions of citation frequencies and number of published papers.[Methods] We chose 85 biology journals indexed in JCR (2016 edition) as samples. The core papers in these journals were selected by the Pareto principle. The weight of number of published articles based on the literature density distribution was designed by Bradford’s law, and the indexes based on the citation frequency distribution were established by Percentile Rank 6. In aim to discuss the effects of PRC, we analyzed the correlations among PRC and other journal evaluation indicators.[Findings] The PRC indicator overcomes the intrinsic defects of impact factor, reasonably reveals the publication scale of journals, and fairly balances the evaluation effects between the relative value indicator and the absolute value indicator with an effect that improves the percentile indicators.[Conclusions] The PRC indicator takes the distribution of both number of published papers and citation frequencies into account, and journal influence can be measured by two dimensions of quantity and quality. It is a new indicator that can be used to evaluate the academic influence of scientific journals.
