Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims at analyzing the use of hedges in Chinese and American medical journals objectively and increasing the accuracy of the articles. [Methods] According to Li Qianju's classification of hedges, the paper analyzed the frequency, types and distribution of hedges in every move of English abstracts, using the corpora built by Wang Lanying. [Findings] Relative data indicate that the tendency of hedging distribution is almost the same in every move, but there is significant difference in its types and frequency. The use of hedges such as“could, might and so on”is the highest, and they are mainly in the conclusion part. The use of four types of hedges in American medical journals is significantly higher than that in Chinese medical journals. [Conclusions] In English abstract writing,Chinese authors should appropriately use multiple types of hedges to enhance the accuracy of the expression in order to get the reader's acceptance better.
